Designed for a family with two young boys, this contemporary farmhouse-style construction project began as an architectural concept by John Hamilton, who left room for a lot of creative input from Imbuia. We refined the vision, overcoming challenges with soft soils, unusually rainy weather, and open-ended design elements to create a sophisticated yet warm modern home. The result is a masterful balance of form and function, where clean lines and seamless transitions define every space and perfectly capture what “Built by Imbuia” means to our clients.

- There are three and a half bathrooms, the master and a shared children’s bathroom on the second floor, and a full and powder room on the first floor. The master bath is sleek and contemporary, while the other baths are playful and colorful, with creative and abstract design elements.
- A library/study area features vibrant plum and peach tones, infusing color into the home’s refined design.
- Detached double garage with an attached dedicated gym and storage room.
- A garden area provides a balance of greenery and modern design.
Precision Engineering and Seamless Design
The lot had soft soils, and building on them required extensive ground preparation. Before construction could begin, the existing home and its footings had to be removed, followed by a three-foot excavation and extensive soil re-compaction to accommodate a structurally sound foundation.
A historically wet winter in early 2023 led to months of stop-and-go progress, requiring repeated soil recompaction before the concrete foundation could be formed and poured. Once complete, the home’s structural integrity was as strong as its architectural beauty. Here are a few highlights of this contemporary farmhouse.
Concrete floor & seamless transitions
Initially, the architect designed a concrete floor but left space for creative input about details like thresholds, allowing Imbuia Construction to refine the design. We added a Venetian plaster topping on all bathroom floors throughout the home to create flush transitions throughout. We integrated custom Schluter channels at tile and custom Kerfed white oak jambs on all doors to keep lines crisp and elegant at all termination points.
With the Venetian plaster topping and flush jambs, this contemporary Westlawn farmhouse enjoys no elevation change across the home, ensuring a fluid transition between ceramic tile, drywall, white oak, and concrete.
Floating staircase
The design called for an open feel throughout the home, providing unrestricted sightlines between primary living areas. A floating staircase provides a unique architectural element that contributes significantly to this open feel. This steel-framed staircase features custom white oak treads, stainless steel cable banisters strung between black painted steel posts and is topped with a white oak railing.
