A growing family with three young boys wanted to stay in their Culver City home because of its proximity to parks and excellent schools. However, their small single-story 1950s home didn’t meet their needs and lifestyle. A new residential construction project offered a perfect solution.
Determined to stay, they built their dream home from the ground up on their current property. They worked with AAHA Studios, a firm we’ve collaborated with before, to develop the new house design. The designers created an open interior feel featuring a floating staircase leading to the private landing, a reading area, and a library. The design doubled the space, providing much-needed room for the growing family.
The family rented housing nearby since this project involved a complete tear-down and rebuild. They were onsite daily to check progress, which Imbuia Construction supports as it enables open and transparent communications and decision-making during the project.
Outdoor Residential Spaces
The owners’ specifications for their dream home also included providing a secure outside space for the boys and connecting them to the inside family areas through floor-to-ceiling multislide pocket doors. An exterior spiral staircase accesses the rooftop patio from the lower patio. All railings inside and out are clear glass, complementing the space’s open sightlines and airy feel.
Feature-Filled New Residential Construction
This Culver City residence was designed to be a breathtaking masterpiece that was as efficient as it was beautiful. Notable aspects of this new home construction include:

- A Tesla Solar System powers the home, with two Power Walls installed in the detached garage.
- The HVAC system is a ducted multi-zone heat pump mini split, controlled entirely via a smartphone app for effortless climate management.
- Western Window System’s windows and doors feature triple bi-pass and bi-pass pocket applications for seamless indoor-outdoor flow.
- The exterior showcases modern elegance with smooth plaster, a rain screen crafted from Ipe (also known as Brazilian Walnut), and stone cladding.
- Railings throughout the home are made of tempered glass, enhancing the open and light-filled design.
- A structural steel beam supports the interior staircase, which has wood treads and glass railings that add contemporary warmth.
- A pass-through concertina window and counter connect the kitchen to the outdoor deck, which features a BBQ and seating area for family gatherings.
- The kitchen includes quartzite countertops, white rift oak cabinetry, and engineered white oak flooring for a cohesive, elegant finish.
- Integral planters are built into the architecture, bringing greenery and life into the design.
- The step-down living room features a three-sided glass fireplace, providing a stunning focal point and cozy ambiance.
- The front pergola, crafted from Ipe wood to match the rain screen, is paired with composite decking in the front and rear for durability and beauty.
